We planning a 4 day 3 night trip on the Mickelson. I’d thinking night one in Hill City, night two in Custer after detour to Mt. Rushmore and night 3 in Hot Springs. How is the the ride from Minnekahta to Hot Springs via route 18. We are a party of four and a little concerned with traffic

Dave, hwy 18 has a good shoulder to ride on, cars will be passing you fast and it is open to wind so being on it in the morning or later afternoon is better. 43 years ago I rode from Batavia to North of St Charles daily for work, and I feel safer in traffic out here than I ever did back there. The people out here are very courteous for the most part. if you stop for a drink don't be surprised if trucks pull over to make sure you are OK. I hope you enjoy your ride.
