I have one long day of biking (7AM to 5 PM) and a second day of 3 hours on the trail. Staying at Hill City, SD.

Where should I go to get most bang for the buck on such a short stay?

I'm only speaking for myself but using your schedule I'd ride north out of Hill City. You'll see more forested/scenic views rather that the open plains view if you rode south. Plus, when I've been on the more open southern portion it can be very windy.

Hill City is at MilePost 60. The northern end of the trail at Deadwood is MP 108. So that's 96 miles roundtrip in one day. If you only went to Rochford at MP 82, now you are down to only 44 miles roundtrip. Very doable. Plus, you'll go through 3 of the 4 tunnels on the trail (there are no tunnels going south) and you could reach all 4 tunnels going another 7 miles north of Rochford.

I'd look over this map to see the elevation changes because that's a big part of any distance you'll plan, especially if it's very hot and humid the day you ride.

The map will show you both distances and elevation gain or loss. If you are up for 96 miles in one day, going north to Deadwood would be my choice. But even going to Rochford is a fun ride. JMHO.

Good luck and stay safe.
